'Warren'I>
Families covered: Warrenne of Surrey, Warrenne of Warrenne
Wa32Walter de St. Martin (b c922)
Wa31. William de Warrenne (b c950)
  m. dau of Ralph de Torta
The above were found on a web site. TCP (Surrey) starts with ...
  Wa30 Rodulf or Ralph de Warrenne (b c998, a 1074)
m1. Beatrice (niece of Gunnor, Duchess of Normandy)
  i. Rudol de Warrenne
Wa29 William de Warrenne, Earl of Warrenne, 1st Earl of Surrey (d 24.06.1088)§B
m1. Gundred (d 27.05.1085, dau of Gerbhod of St. Omer)§T§
Gundred is identified by various sources (including BE1883) as daughter of William the Conqueror but this is strongly disputed by others. The connection shown here is somewhat controversial but was suggested in 1874 by J.R. Planché, whose excellent book on 'The Conqueror and his Companions' is available on a web site (see the relevant section on the 'Individuals' page). This treats Gundred as The Conqueror's step-daughter rather than a daughter of his own blood. It is queried by TCP (Surrey) which identifies her as sister of Gerbod the Fleming, Earl of Chester, but is not certain that their father was Gerbod of St. Omer and supports a source that apparently rejects the idea that her mother was Matilda of Flanders. The connection shown here for Gundred's ancestry may yet be removed.
Wa28 William de Warrenne, Earl of Warrenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey (d 11.05.1138)
  m. (1116/8) Isabelle de Vermandois (Ve28) dau of Hugh 'the Great', Count de Vermandois)
Wa27-1 William de Warrenne, Earl of Warrenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey (b 1119?, d 19.01.1147/8)
  m. Ala Talvas (d 04.10.1174, dau of William Talvas 'of Shrewsbury', Count of Ponthieu)
  (A) Isabel de Warenne, Countess of Surrey (b 1137, d 12/3.07.1199)
HJY
m1. (before 06.11.1513, sp) Guillaume (William) de Blois, Count de Boulogne et de Mortain, Earl of Warenne and Surrey, Lord of Pevensey and Norwich (d 11.10.1159)
  m2. (1164) Hamelin Plantagenet, 5th Earl of Surrey (b 1130, d 07.05.1202)
HJY
  Wa27-2 Reginald de Warren
BE1883 notes that "Watson, in his History of the House of Warren, corroborated by Camden and Ormerod, make this Reginald to have m. Aldelia de Mowbray, and to have had a son, William, from whom he deduces the family of Warren, of Poynton" but neverthess shows him as married to Alice de Wirmgay with the following children. TCP identifies him as ancestor of the Warennes of Wormegay.
  m. Alice de Wirmgay (dau of William de Wirmgay)
  (A) William de Warren of Wirmgay or Wormegay
m(1). Beatrix le Pierrepont (dau of Hugh le Pierrepont)
  (i) Reginald de Warren (dsp)
(ii) Beatrix de Warren (d before12.12.1204)
m1. Doun or Dodo Bardolf of Shelford (d 1209/before 24.02.1204/5)
m2. Hubert de Bourgh, later Earl of Kent (d 12.05.1243)
  (iii) Isabel de Warren
  m. Geoffrey de Merlay
  (B) Alice de Warren
  m. Reginald de Dunstanvil
Although various web sites make the connection (as we once did), the dates indicate that this was not the Reginald de Dunstanville who was father of Alan whose daughter Alice married Thomas Basset.
  Wa27-3 Ralph de Warren (dsp)
  Wa27-4 Gundred de Warrene (d after 1166)
GHJSY
  m1.(by 1130) Roger de Newburgh, 2nd Earl of Warwick (b 1102, d 12.06.1153)

  m2. (c1154) William de Lancaster, lord of Kendal (b after 1100, d 1170)

GHJRSWY
  m. (1139) Henry, Earl of Huntingdon (dvp 12.06.1152)
GHJRSWY
Wa28-2 Rainald / Reginald / Reynald de Warren
Shown by some (including, initially, ourselves) as the Reginald who married Alice de Wirmgay (now shown above). TCP reports that Rainald succeeded his father in Flanders.
Wa28-3 Edith (or Gundred) de Warren
GHJSWY
m1. Gerard de Gournay, lord of Yarmouth (d 1104 Palestine)
HY
m2. Drew de Monceux = Dreux III, Sire de Mouchy (Monchy)
GHJSWY
Wa28-4 daughter mentioned by BE1883 but not by TCP
  m. Ernise de Colungis
  m2. _ Guet (a 1098, sister of Richard Guet)
  m2. Emma (a 1074)
Wa30=Mo29. ??y de Warren (b about 1010 d about 1066) as brother of Wa29 above, if Roger was not his son.Part of this family in a way that has not yet been confirmed was Roger de Mortimer. TCP dedicates an appendix (volume IX, Appendix A) to considering the relationship between Roger and William de Warrenne but is inconclusive other than to confirm that there was close kinsmanship.
  Wa29=Mo28 Roger de Mortimer, Sn de Mortemer-sur-Eulne (a 1054, d before 1086)
GHJSY
  m. Hawise de Valois (dau of Raoul III 'the Great', Count de Valois, d'Amien, etc)
